Waukesha County UW-Extension Nutrition Education Program
As part of the Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program (WNEP) the UW-Extension nutrition educators provide research based education at community agencies or individual homes. WNEP is made up of 2 federally funded nutrition education programs: Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) which is currently teaching the “Eating Smart & Being Active”  (pdf, 2 pgs, 180KB) curriculum; and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed). Programs are available to families and individuals within established guidelines at no cost.

MyPlate replaces MyPyramid
MyPlate website features an easy-to-remember icon—a colorful dinner plate divided into sections for fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins next to a circle representing a cup labeled dairy. The site at http://www.choosemyplate.gov/ also offers tools and resources to help consumers put the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans into action by building healthy eating patterns. MyPlate replaces the former USDA MyPyramid food guide.

Program Mission: Empower limited income individuals and families to make healthy food choices by providing practical and reliable nutrition, food safety and budgeting information.
What do we teach? All of the Nutrition Education offerings emphasize easy to prepare, low cost, nutritious food selections, and safe food preparation. We teach nutrition using the USDA dietary guidelines, which stress eating a variety of foods with plenty of grains, fruits, and vegetables while limiting fat, sugar, sodium and alcohol. In addition, we teach strategies for stretching the food dollar or food stamps.
Areas of Specialization: The Waukesha County Nutrition Education Program targets limited income families and individuals. Program focus is on:

  • Practical and Reliable Information on Nutrition, Food Safety and Budgeting
  • Food Buying and Resource Management Practices to Insure Having Enough Food to Eat
  • Maximize Family and Individual Nutrition to Reduce Health Risks
