The Waukesha County 4-H Youth Development Program creates a supportive environment for diverse youth and adults to reach their fullest potential. In support of this mission, we will:
  • Provide formal and non-formal community focused experiential learning.
  • Develop skills that benefit youth throughout life.
  • Foster leadership and volunteerism in youth and adults.
  • Build internal and external partnerships for programming and funding.
  • Strengthen families and communities.
  • Use research-based knowledge and the land grant university system.

Achievement of this mission will result in capable, competent and caring youth. The Waukesha County 4-H Youth Development program is open to youth in Kindergarten (K5) through 13th grade with adult interaction for life skill development.

What is 4-H?

4-H is a fun, informal youth centered educational program. Youth have fun by joining and participating in hands-on learning in projects, activities or special events. Youth are guided via adult interaction in their areas of interest by the teaching of life skills.

The majority of the Waukesha County 4-H membership is in community based 4-H clubs. Clubs usually meet monthly to conduct business, have activities and an educational program. Project meetings and family activities are held outside of the monthly club general meeting.

Youth participate in 4-H by enrolling in project work which focuses on subjects such as pet care, dogs, cats, drawing and painting, models, rockets, gardening and clowning. There are over 80 projects youth can enroll in.

Youth also participate in activities which emphasize either individual or team experiences. Examples include: drama, music, basketball, public speaking and community service.

Youth are asked to maintain a Record Book, or similar document, which reflects and serves as the official record of their 4-H participation. This Record Book provides supporting documentation as the member continues in the 4-H program for awards, scholarships and trips.

Read the 4-H FAQ for more information on Waukesha’s 4-H program.

How to Join 4-H

The first step in joining 4-H is to choose a local 4-H club because 4-H enrollment happens at a 4-H club meeting. Most families choose a club based on its meeting location and/or meeting day of the week. Others choose a club because they have friends in that club. There are also a few project-based clubs such as horse and dog.

A current list of 4-H clubs can be found here. Families are welcome to “drop in” on a 4-H club to check it out or contact the 4-H leader in charge of a club before joining a club. For leader contact information, call or e-mail the Waukesha County 4-H office.

The best time to join 4-H is in the fall of the year when the 4-H year begins. However, youth may join 4-H any time of the year as Waukesha County 4-H has an open enrollment policy. Most project meetings begin in January. Youth joining 4-H after March 1 will be unable to show their 4-H projects at that year’s County Fair. (Some Waukesha County 4-H clubs do have enrollment cut-off dates.)

Kindergarteners (K5), first and second graders participate in the Waukesha County 4-H program as Cloverbud members. Third graders and higher participate as regular 4-H members.

Waukesha County Fair

The County fair is one of the great events in a 4-H child’s life. Yearly they put the lessons learned into practice, culminating in a chance to show their community, their projects. The lessons passed on from generation to generation are immeasurable. The excitement of seeing what others have created is enjoyable by all. The self-esteem building pride of showing your accomplishments to relatives and friends. The friendships and sense of accomplishment created by this endeavor last a life time. Come join us at the fair. Visit their web site.
